In the game "X3: Terran Conflict" the Earth has Orbital Torus, it's looks like your rings:) love this idea, hope people in the future will construct it:)

Gorgeous :D. I thought you'd like to know that I credited this with a linkback as inspiration for my description of lunar orbital rings in my Mass Effect-related fanfic, here: [link].

No self respecting planet should exist without one!
Well, unless its going to be demolished by a space highway.

Looks great.

No problems ! In photoshop I always use two important tools for me, the basic rounded brush and the smudge tool.
I start with the basic brush on an empty layer (over a black layer) with a color of your choice with 5% or 8% opacity and with 100% of hardness and I paint a little on my layer (not the entire surface).
After I use the smudge tool with a quite big size, with 8% of intensity and without spacing (0%). So I smudge my paint on my layer, and I repeat this on many layers with different colors (blue, white, black...). What I love with this is that you can do a very detail gradient and you can easily put a light source.
So I hope you will enjoy my answer ?

Thanks again :thanks: :)

Awesome --

I guess the scale is off though. Light dots, structure details and texture in the light blue surfaces make the impression of sth. much smaller than planet size.

I wonder if this could be overcome to make the concept -- well, perfect.

Really, really fantastic work. And I love the science behind it, too. I can totally see this as a plausible future approach to planet expansion.

PS: You really only need to mention the DPI when you're listing the dimensions in inches/centimeters, etc. (in other words, 4000px x 5600px is exactly the same at any DPI )

Hello, and thank you very much for the comment !! :)

For the DPI in my deviation's comment, I think it's something interesting because it shows that the work was done in " high quality ".
This is just a personal opinion of course.... You can create something in 4000px X 5600px in 72dpi only or at 300 dpi. When you print it, it isn't the same quality. ;)

Actually, that's not true. :) A lot of people have a hard time understanding DPI, because they are taught the wrong way. Consider this:

If you have a document that is 4000px X 5600px @ 300dpi, it is the exact same thing as 4000px X 5600px @ 72dpi. The DPI doesn't matter, because the height and width are being defined in pixels. Ok, so why? Because DPI stands for dots per "inch."

Now here's where DPI actually matters: if you say you have a 1inch X 1inch file at 72 DPI, that would be 72 "dots" X 72 "dots" = 5184 total dots.
However, if you have the same 1inch X 1inch at 300 DPI, it would be 300 "dots" X 300 "dots" = 90,000 dots (a much higher quality).
Both are 1 *inch* squares, but the second one has higher quality because of the DPI.

You see, it's because you're measuring in inches that the DPI matters. However if a file is a certain pixel height & width, the DPI is irrelevant.

Anyway, I'm not trying to be a jerk, just explain. I'm a college instructor who teaches graphic design, it's a habit. In any case, you do great work. :)

Wow !!! Thanks a lot for your very interesting explanations, respectful. So now, I don't have to work, each time @300dpi :)
The files will be lighter I think... ;)

And you're not a jerk of course !!

:thanks:

Great concept. It's even quite believable considering the current theories in astronomy.
